At the risk of sounding like an out-of-touch boomer, I’m going to have to give the “lazy girl job” trend a massive thumbs down. I get it, trust me I do. I spent years being undervalued in corporate gigs and I understand the need to completely check out to safeguard your mental health. But, I think the long-term effects of hopping on a trend you saw some stranger bragging about on TikTok can be more harmful than helpful. Also, one person’s laziness can be another’s hardworking.
The Lazy Girl Job, as it’s being called, is centered around taking on roles that fly under the radar, usually administrative in nature, where you can work without constantly being in the spotlight. These roles are designed to help people find a better work-life balance and ease the toll on their mental health.
The trend caters to people who have experienced mental health challenges due to toxic work environments, poor work-life balance, or excessive work demands. It’s essentially a way to tip the scales in favor of relaxation, allowing individuals to go about their workday, complete tasks, and head home without the added stress and pressure.
The Lazy Girl Job is particularly appealing for those who have faced situations like mandatory overtime, weekend work, or having to shoulder the responsibilities of an understaffed team. These roles offer a way to fulfill your job duties while avoiding the unnecessary burdens that can often accompany more demanding positions.

Natural Born Leaders and Ambitious Individuals
However, not everyone is well-suited for a Lazy Girl Job. If you’re naturally inclined to leadership, ambition, and proactive problem-solving, this kind of role might not align with your strengths. This career track requires a certain level of detachment from the limelight and a willingness to let others take the lead in problem-solving. If you’re passionate about making a positive impact, you might find it frustrating to stay on the sidelines and not address issues you notice.
Job Security and Longevity
One crucial aspect to consider is job security. Lazy Girl Jobs can sometimes be the first ones to face layoffs during challenging times. If you’ve been in a role where you’ve simply coasted along without making significant contributions, it could be challenging to find a new job when you’re suddenly out of work. Building job security and longevity in your career is important, especially if you have financial responsibilities like caring for family members.
Overcrowded Market
Moreover, these roles might eventually lead you into an overcrowded job market if you’re not careful. If you’ve spent a year or two in a Lazy Girl Job without really building up your skill set or accomplishments, it could be tough to stand out among the crowd when seeking your next opportunity. Job markets can be competitive, and having a solid track record of achievements becomes important.
Choosing Wisely
If the Lazy Girl Job trend piques your interest, consider looking for roles in industries that are on the rise and evolving. These fields are constantly expanding and can offer remote, low-profile roles that still contribute to innovative projects.
The Lazy Girl Job can be a good fit for some people seeking a better work-life balance and a break from demanding roles. However, it’s crucial to assess whether such a role aligns with your natural strengths and career goals.
Don’t let trends on social media dictate your career choices; instead, focus on what will provide you with stability, growth, and satisfaction in the long run.
Remember, your career is a journey that requires thoughtful consideration of your personal strengths, aspirations, and the evolving job market. So, whether you choose the Lazy Girl Job path or pursue something more challenging, make sure it’s a decision rooted in your individual needs and aspirations.
