What is going on? 2024 was supposed to be so different, yet it feels like we’re experiencing even more layoffs than in 2023.
Starting a new year always brings a sense of hope and excitement for what lies ahead. However, things may have taken a turn for the worse for some of you with unexpected layoffs. It’s okay to feel disoriented and unsure of what to do next. Dealing with a fresh layoff can be challenging, but there are ways to turn this setback into an opportunity for growth and renewal. With the right mindset and strategies, you can overcome this challenge and come out stronger.
You don’t have to handle this situation alone. If you’re interested, I laid out my entire career coaching process to help you get acclimated to how I help my clients. I’m here to support you in getting that next job.

Navigating a fresh layoff requires a combination of practical steps, emotional resilience, and strategic planning. So here are 10 things you should try to do as soon as you learn that you are being laid off.
1. Understand the Terms of the Layoff
The first step in navigating a layoff is to gain clarity on the terms of your departure. Schedule a follow-up meeting with your HR leader to discuss any lingering questions or concerns you may have. Understand the details of your severance package, including its duration and payout structure. Additionally, inquire about the continuation of health insurance coverage and any unused benefits, such as vacation time.
2. Embrace a Staycation to Reflect and Recharge
Rather than viewing the layoff as a defeat, see it as an opportunity to celebrate your accomplishments and recharge for the journey ahead. Take a staycation or a short vacation to reflect on your career path, assess your goals, and clarify your next steps. Use this time to disconnect from external pressures and focus on self-care and introspection.
3. File for Unemployment
Once you’ve taken time to reflect, it’s essential to address your financial needs by filing for unemployment benefits ASAP. While it may feel humbling to navigate the application process, unemployment benefits serve as a crucial financial cushion during your job transition period.
4. Assess and Adjust Your Spending
With a reduced income, it’s vital to reassess your spending habits and adjust your budget accordingly. Identify areas where you can scale back expenses without compromising essential needs. Prioritize financial stability by building an emergency fund to cover unforeseen expenses during your job search.
5. Prioritize Health and Wellness
During times of uncertainty, prioritizing your health and well-being is paramount. Take advantage of any remaining health insurance coverage to schedule essential medical appointments and address any lingering health concerns. If applicable, explore options such as Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) to supplement healthcare expenses.
6. Develop a Structured Job Search Strategy
Approach your job search with intentionality and structure by creating a detailed job search schedule. Dedicate focused time each day to activities such as updating your resume, networking on LinkedIn, and actively applying for positions. Strike a balance between productivity and self-care to avoid burnout during the job search process.
7. Expand Your Professional Network
Tap into your professional network by reconnecting with former colleagues and expanding your LinkedIn connections. Leverage these relationships to gain insights into job opportunities and seek recommendations or endorsements to enhance your professional profile.
8. Cultivate a Supportive Inner Circle
Building a supportive inner circle of trusted former colleagues can provide invaluable emotional and professional support during your job search. Foster relationships with people who understand your unique situation and can offer guidance, referrals, and encouragement throughout your career transition journey.
9. Seek Professional Guidance if Needed
If navigating the job search process feels overwhelming, consider seeking support from a career coach (like me!) or therapist. A career coach can provide personalized guidance and resources to accelerate your job search, while therapy can offer emotional support and help you navigate the complexities of career transition.
10. Stay Resilient and Persistent
Above all, maintain resilience and persistence as you navigate the challenges of a fresh layoff. Embrace setbacks as learning opportunities, stay adaptable to change, and remain committed to your long-term career goals. With resilience, perseverance, and a proactive approach, you can emerge stronger and more resilient from this transitional period.
By following these ten steps and embracing this period as an opportunity for growth and renewal, you can navigate your career transition with confidence and resilience. Remember, you have the skills, resources, and support to overcome this challenge and emerge stronger on the other side.
