Let’s dive into the art of networking with complete confidence! It’s possible that you’re not doing it the right way, but don’t worry, we’re going to fix that. In an economy where opportunities are scarce, we literally can’t afford to make mistakes. Here are my tried and true methods that will help you network like a pro.

The Two-Way Street of Networking

First and foremost, let’s establish that networking is a two-way street. It’s not a switch you turn on only when you need something. If you’re seeking resources, consider finding someone offering those services and compensating them appropriately. Networking isn’t about taking without giving—it’s a reciprocal relationship.

When it comes to networking, I like to compare it to fitness. Both require consistent effort and daily engagement to achieve desired results. Just as you can’t expect to see significant fitness improvements without regular exercise, you can’t expect to build a strong network without daily engagement.

It’s essential to put in the effort to make connections, engage with industry threads, and stay up to date with the latest developments. Even something as simple as liking someone’s LinkedIn post can be a step towards building and maintaining a professional relationship. The key is to make every effort count and be consistent in your networking routine.

LinkedIn: Your Professional Playground

LinkedIn is a social networking platform that primarily focuses on professional connections and career development. It provides a great opportunity to follow individuals of interest, including industry leaders, influencers, and potential employers. By following people in your industry, you can stay updated on their current projects, industry developments, and insights.

After you have found people to follow, it is important to interact with their content. This can be done by leaving comments on their posts, sharing their content with your network, or mentioning them in relevant posts. By engaging with their content in a meaningful manner, you can build a real connection with them.

However, it’s important to remember that creating a genuine connection takes time and effort. You should avoid sending direct messages until you have established a strong relationship with the individual. Instead, focus on building a connection through engagement and sharing valuable insights. Once you have created a genuine connection, you can then consider sending a direct message to further the conversation.

Crafting Your Approach: Gradual and Genuine

Messaging is a skill that requires finesse, and timing is essential. Begin by acknowledging the recipient’s message, expressing gratitude, and gradually establishing a connection. When the time is right, suggest moving the conversation beyond LinkedIn. The goal is to keep the interaction natural and organic, similar to cultivating a friendship.

Supporting Others Pays Off

It’s important to remember that supporting others in your network can benefit you as well. You can engage with their content, such as a LinkedIn Live session or an Instagram post, which costs you nothing but can help build a natural connection with them. The ultimate goal is to expand your universe and increase your chances of getting to where you want to be.

Utilizing Networking for Insights

Networking isn’t just about job hunting; it’s a resource for gaining insights. Share your journey and experiences. Recently, I connected with a communications expert on LinkedIn, seeking advice. Engaging with his content led to a Zoom call where I gained valuable insights—for free!

The Don’ts of Networking

Now, let’s talk about the don’ts. Networking isn’t a race; rushing through it won’t bring you closer to your goals. Be mindful of the individuals you’re approaching. Ensure you’re addressing them correctly and avoid dumping your agenda on them in the first message.

Be Human, Be Natural

Remember, networking is about connecting with humans, not idolizing them. Be genuine, not pushy. Don’t demand time; instead, create a natural conversation. And please, don’t neglect to post on LinkedIn. Share your thoughts, industry updates, or even personal goals. It keeps you visible and approachable.

Connect and Conquer

To sum it up, networking is about connecting and conquering together. It’s an ongoing journey that requires effort, patience, and authenticity. Now that we’ve unraveled the secrets of effective networking, what are your tips? Share them in the comments, and let’s build a network of unstoppable go-getters. If you have questions or need assistance navigating LinkedIn, drop me a message.

Until next time, happy networking!

I know what it’s like to feel stuck. To second-guess your career moves. To wonder if you’ll ever land a job that pays what you deserve and lets you thrive.

I’ve been there.

I started my career as a journalist, crafting stories that informed and inspired. But after years in the industry, I found myself at a crossroads, questioning my next move. Transitioning out of journalism wasn’t easy—I had to rebrand myself, rewrite my own career story, and learn how to position my skills for new opportunities.

That’s when I realized: so many professionals struggle with this. Whether it’s breaking into a new field, leveling up to higher-paying roles, or just figuring out what’s next, the job market can feel overwhelming.

That’s why I built The Curated Career.

I don’t believe in generic career advice. I believe in strategy, positioning, and playing the long game. I help professionals like you show up with confidence, build a career story that makes sense, and finally land the roles they deserve.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start making moves, let’s talk. You don’t have to do this alone—I’ve got you.
