I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to choose a job to pay the bills. With all the hard work and contributions I’ve given throughout my nearly two-decade-long career, I think I’m worth more than that. I have earned the right to pursue a path I’m excited about. Don’t you agree?
What I’ve noticed, especially for those of us in creative realms, is that we get to a point where we feel undervalued, maybe a little burnt out with the lane we thought would bring us happiness for many years to come. It usually stems from our false view of a lack of relevance (there goes that imposter syndrome again) to what we’re doing due to all of the sudden changes happening around us.
Things are different now. The fields we entered have fewer bells and whistles and we are grasping for straws to stay innovative and ahead of the curve. So, we start looking for other things with skills that are easy to acquire and won’t chip away at our value.
It’s okay to feel lost sometimes. I believe I have the solution to your problems and I have shared it in my latest YouTube video. In this video, I explain in detail what it takes to make a successful career change in 2024.
Enter The Year of the Pivot I’m calling it: 2024 will be the year of blooming for creative professionals who feel confined to a niche. Due to the seemingly endless downsizing due to AI, automation, and a rocky economic climate, we’ve got to stay adaptable to all that is happening. 2024 will be your year to step into your rebrand and pivot into a space that will give you opportunities for advancement, pay you your worth, and may even make you happier as a whole.
If we take a look around us, we will see that everything is constantly changing. I don’t think we have witnessed such a rapid pace of change, whether for better or worse, since the internet’s inception. I predict that with the rise of AI and automation, along with companies becoming more customer-focused and efficient, there will be fewer unfulfilling jobs and more careers that allow individuals to make a meaningful impact.
Your goal as a job seeker looking to make a pivot is to be on the right side of that change.
Understanding Your Transferable Skills
To consider a pivot, it’s important to identify your high-level transferable skills. Instead of thinking like an employee who has only worked in one job for years, you should think like a CEO who is looking to hire the best person for the job. Try to identify which skills you’ve developed in your current role that could be useful in a related field. This will require some self-reflection and research. Focus on understanding your transferable skills by identifying what’s in demand and how your previous experiences can align with them.
After you have a broad picture of the skills neighboring industries might find valuable, you need to talk up these skills at a high level. You are a total salesman and you have to figure out how to have conversations to get people to listen to you and value what you have to offer. Emotional intelligence and soft skills can help you develop the connectivity that you’ll need to get into the room. Figuring out the pain points of the industry and becoming the remedy.
Ramp Up Your Networking Game
Networking was huge in 2023, and it will be even bigger in 2024. 2023 was the year we all came together, reeling with the shock of these life-altering layoffs across industries and we really leaned on one another. In 2024, you have to take those networking skills that you learned out of necessity and apply them to your level-up. Don’t be afraid to share your dreams or visions with people who can help you connect those dots.
I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to know the industry inside and outside. You have to remember that you’re competing with people who have direct experience and training for the roles that you want.
You’ll want to begin networking with professionals in your desired field. You can network online by showing up to their livestreams and events or in person by scanning sites like Eventbrite to see if any of the professional organizations are hosting events that you can attend.
Bonus tip: Whatever you choose to do. Always send a short note thanking the person for hosting the event, and sharing your your insights. This is how you show up and get to know people.
I’ve got a few more tips in this video. You’ll want to watch it all the way through to get a full understanding of how you should approach your job switch strategy in 2024.
